About SPACE

SPACE is a 12-week course for special guardians and adoptive parents to learn proven approaches to support the child you care for. SPACE stands for Safety, Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy, the core principles at the heart of therapeutic parenting.

The course gives you a safe space to come together with people in a similar situation to gain practical knowledge around caring for a child who has experienced early life trauma

SPACE is interactive too, which helps you better understand a child’s experiences, feelings, and behaviour. You’ll learn about new and different approaches you can use to help them.

The course is run by experienced members of our dedicated support service. You’ll be part of a small group and go through weekly sessions over 12 weeks, usually during school term time.

If you are concerned about the 12-week commitment, you can contact our team by phone to get one-to-one support. They can share ways you can care for a child and put the principles of therapeutic parenting into practice.

SPACE runs at different times of the year depending on staff schedules and how many people are signed up to attend.

I’m really grateful for the SPACE experience and friendships I’ve formed. It’s been great to try things out each week and then bring them back into the group to share and learn from each other. For the first time since they came home, I feel confident I can care for them the way they need me to.
